Powering the 2021 Toyota Prius is a hybrid system that consists of a gasoline engine, an electric motor, and a traction battery. This hybrid system produces a net horsepower of 121 hp. The gasoline engine is this system is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder aluminum DOHC 16-valve with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence and EV/ECO/POWER Modes. This engine delivers up to 95 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque. The motor is a permanent magnet AC synchronous motor that produces 120 lb-ft of torque, has a maximum voltage of 600 volts, and a power output of 71 horsepower. All-Wheel-Drive trims also come with a magnetless rear motor that has 5 kW of power.
There are two traction batteries available for the 2021 Prius. The first is a Sealed Nickel-Metal Hydride battery with 201.6 volts of power and the second is a Lithium-Ion battery with 207.2 volts of power. Paired with the hybrid system is an Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission. Additionally, the Prius can be equipped with a front-wheel drive or Electronic On-Demand Compact All-Wheel Drive system.
